Spotify Introduces Messaging Feature: A Step Toward Becoming More Social

Spotify, one of the world’s most popular music streaming platforms, has officially launched a messaging feature that allows users to chat directly within the app. This new update marks a major step toward making Spotify more interactive and social, beyond just streaming music and podcasts.

What’s New With Spotify Messages?

For years, Spotify users have shared links to music and podcasts through external apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, or Facebook. Now, Spotify wants to keep those conversations inside its own platform. With the new in-app messaging system, users can:

Chat one-on-one with friends.
Keep a history of shared songs, playlists, or podcasts.
React to messages with emojis.

Manage privacy by approving chat requests.

Currently, messaging is limited to one-on-one conversations with people you’ve previously interacted with on Spotify — such as through a collaborative playlist, Blend, Jam session, or Family/Duo plan.

How Does It Work?

Starting a chat is simple. If you share or receive a Spotify link outside the app (on Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, or Snapchat), you can tap the link and approve a chat request. You can also send an invite link directly to someone in your contacts.

Messages are accessible from your profile picture under the Messages section. However, it’s important to note that Spotify’s chats are encrypted in storage and during transfer, but not end-to-end encrypted. The company monitors messages for violations of its policies, and users can also report inappropriate messages.

Where Is the Feature Available?

Spotify has started rolling out the messaging feature in Latin America and South America for users over 16. In the coming weeks, it will expand to major regions including the United States, Canada, Brazil, the EU, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. The feature is available for both free and premium users, but only on the mobile app version for now.

Why Is Spotify Becoming More Social?

Over the past few years, Spotify has slowly added more social elements. For example:

Following friends and seeing what they listen to.

Adding comments to podcasts.
Introducing a redesigned, video-focused feed.

This new chat feature builds on Spotify’s plan to make the platform more engaging and keep users from leaving the app for social interactions.

Mixed Reactions From Users

While some users are excited to chat directly on Spotify, others feel the app is becoming too cluttered with features. Many people just want a clean, simple interface to listen to music without distractions. Luckily, if you don’t want to use the feature, you can go to Settings > Privacy & Social and disable messages.

Final Thoughts

Spotify’s new messaging feature could completely change the way users interact with music and friends. Whether it becomes a popular addition or just another unused option remains to be seen. But one thing is clear — Spotify is no longer just a music app, it’s evolving into a social platform for audio lovers.
